🍣 A Sushi Spot You’d Never Expect—in the Heart of Hasami

I need to tell you about this quiet little sushi place I found in Hasami.

Next time you come to Japan,
please try to make a little detour to Hasami Town in Nagasaki.

It’s mostly known for ceramics—there are galleries, studios, cute cafés...
The whole place has this calm, creative vibe. You can feel it in the air, honestly.

And in the middle of it all, I stumbled upon this amazing little sushi spot.

The name is “Sushikatsu” (寿司勝)

It’s pronounced sushi-katsu—not a chain or anything like that.
From the outside, it looks super simple. So simple you might just walk right past it.

But once you slide that door open, something shifts.
The smell of wood, soft lighting, and one quiet man behind the counter.

The warm, wooden counter where the chef prepares each piece carefully.

No small talk, no gimmicks. Just fish, rice, and the quiet movement of his hands.

Each piece of sushi was its own quiet little masterpiece

I went with the omakase course, just letting the chef serve what he thought was best.

He places each piece in front of you, one by one. No fancy tricks, nothing flashy—just real sushi.

Freshly made sushi, each piece carefully crafted and beautifully simple.
  • Toro – melts the moment it hits your tongue.
  • Anago – warm, soft, with a whisper of charcoal.
  • Uni – like taking a clean breath of the ocean.
  • Miso soup – served at the end, wrapping it all up gently.

Hasami may be famous for pottery—but that’s not the whole story

Every plate was a quiet showpiece. Turns out, they’re all Hasami-yaki ceramics, locally made.

Sushi and ceramics. Each one complements the other. That balance? You don’t find it just anywhere.

Honestly, I want to go back already

This place—Sushikatsu in Hasami—is special because it’s here.
In this quiet, artsy little town.

It feels like a secret you get to be part of.

You just show up, sit at the counter, eat each piece slowly, and walk out into the evening feeling... different.

Just one more thing...

If we ever travel together again,
let’s make a stop in Hasami. We’ll sit down at this counter, try each piece in silence,
and then just nod like: “Yeah, that hit the spot.”

It’s one of those places that looks ordinary…
but stays with you long after you’ve left.
